Background

In Aotearoa prior to European settlement, the Tōtara tree was revered as a rakau rangatira (a chiefly tree) that stood above all others due to its durability, strength and ability to grow in any terrain.

To be compared to a Tōtara tree, was regarded as a term of endearment and pride.

Purpose

1. Just as the Tōtara stands tall in all conditions, we believe every child deserves the chance to grow strong and resilient through education. Our view is that the longer a child can be engaged in education, the more options they will have later in life, whether its further education, the trades, or a job interview.

2. Our mission is to be the roots that support the growth by removing barriers so children can maximise their engagement in the secondary school system.

3. We will do this by providing indirect financial support for secondary school students in need, ensuring they can access the essentials that keep them connected to education, provided certain criteria are met.
